Finally I have been able to post something on the blog! The secretary of the school very kindly lent me a dongle.
Day 1
Sunrise on plane to AmsterdamUp
at 2a.m. to travel with Mr. and Mrs McGraa, our link with the charity ‘Just
Care’ and ‘Medcare’ working in Uganda. We flew from Manchester to Schiphol
Airport, Amsterdam. We then left
Amsterdam for Entebee Airport – a 10 hour journey in total. We were met at the
airport by Rose and Jackson, friends of the McGraa’s who escorted us to a hotel
near the airport. Jackson used to be a famous footballer in Uganda but now runs
his own school in own village.
Day 2
Up for
breakfast at 8.00 a.m. Joshua, our taxi driver and friend of the McGraas
arrived to pick us up and take us to Kampala to buy provisions. The traffic on
the roads is crazy! The boda bodas are something else. Boda bodas are scooters,
there are lots of them and they ‘pull out’ in front of you!! Fortunately Joshua
is a skilful driver and good at swerving and beeping his horn.
Driving
alongside the roads are lots of ‘shanty’ type shops and the Ugandans sit on the
side of the dusty road. The Ugandans often live behind these eclectic mixes of
buildings. A stark contrast to the smart buildings in the city of Kampala in
the background. We went to a supermarket on the outskirts of Kampala, which was similar
to supermarkets in England. The big difference is the security, which is
everywhere. Before you go into the shops your handbag is searched by security
guards!
Finally
arrived at Kamutuuza at 5.30 p.m. Throughout the evening lots of
people came to say ‘Welcome’.
Accommodation
on the school site is basic but luxury compared to what many of the
Ugandans live in. I saw a gecko crawling on our kitchen wall!
Something ‘big’ was flying around my room; I just closed my eyes
tightly and went to sleep under my mosquito net!
Wahey to go!! Bet you'll fill that empty suitcase with souvenirs!! Hope all well and safe home!! XHeather
